What is the Automatic Transfer Switch?
Transfer Switches are used to increase MTBF of a UPS system by allowing a redundant power supply to be used. They incorporate Break Before Make tehcnology to allow transfer to synchronour or non-synchronous power supplies (such as two mains supplies or a mains supply and a diesel generator). An ATS is a transfer switch that uses electromechanical components to control the relays that switch the two power supplies on and off. This makes them slightly slower but less expensive than Static Transfer Switches.
When to use the Automatic Transfer Switch
The ATS is ideal for loads that need the additional reliability afforded by a redundant power supply, but are not over-sensitive to voltage sags. If the load can withstand a gap of around 6 msec then the ATS gives the most cost-effective transfer switch solution.
